When I started running, I had visions of a whole new me. Thinner, faster, more powerful. I also dreamed of the day I would run on the beach – wind in my hair, the activity effortless. When I was spent, I’d drop my gear and dive into the ocean – my favorite place on earth. I knew it would be a high like I’d never experienced.
Now, a year later, having taken 3 months off for a running injury (yeah, it feels cool to say that), my dream came true! Well, not the thinner, effortless part (running on sand is hard!), but the running into the ocean part when I was done. Well, by “done” I mean after I put my iPhone in my car. The reality was every bit as wonderful as I anticipated – probably because the run WASN’T effortless!
Floating for a moment, I said a prayer of thanks for another year by the sea. Seeing a surfer in a sleek black wetsuit, I missed my father so hard it ached, as it always does at the ocean, but even for that I am thankful. Ever catch a wave backwards? Maybe everyone does this, but when I dive into an oncoming wave, I like to find that point in the force of it where it’s the strongest and aim upward. The power of the wave launches me up into the air. “It’s physics.” Dad would have said. It feels like flying.
The Wrightsville Beach surf was smoother than usual, but I managed to catch one little wave, which I rode in just far enough to stretch out at the shoreline. Waves hit me, knocking me backwards and levity returned as I giggled like a kid, glad that at just past golden sunset all the families were gone and the few remaining couples and solitary walkers had no interest in a middle-aged woman playing in the surf.
Admittedly, this may be an odd subject for an opening post on a marketing blog, but if you’re going to listen to my marketing advice, talk to me or one day work with me, I want you to know who I am.
I’m the person who can’t get into something until I believe in it, but once I do, I’m hooked. I’m a person who believes in manners and niceties, but has the most unruly dogs you’ll ever meet. I like a routine, but I build in to my routine plenty of soul-replenishing times. I drink a vegetable/fruit/flaxseed smoothie every morning, but I have a weakness for sweets. I’m that slow runner people look at and think, “Why is she torturing herself?” or maybe “If she can do it, maybe I can.” I hope you’ll be one of the latter and that we will inspire each other to do great things.
